how to photograph rings

My original wedding ring has always been too big but I kept forgetting to do something about it. Last week Bob beat me to the punch and surprised me with an early anniversary present-a new ring! I love pearls but hate gaudy jewelery so the simple design of this one was perfect. (No to mention the added bonus of being able to support an independent artist.)

Like a lot of other things in my life I wanted to style the ring and take lots of pictures. Like a lot of other things in my life it ended up as a blog post. :)

Here’s how I got that first shot:

Arrangement: The pink box is what the ring originally came in so it made sense to start there. Since it’s a pearl ring I grabbed a rope of plastic faux pearls from my closet and styled it around the box. That arrangement looked okay on top of the wood table but not amazing. I really wanted to make the pink of the box and the white of the pearls pop so I pulled out a dark blue piece of paper. Bingo! Beautiful.

Lighting: I took the photo around 9:30-10:00am using natural light from a north facing window. I really wanted to make the pearls gleam so I kneeled down on the left side of the table and shot from there with the window on my left. That’s called Side Lighting and it’s one of my favorite lighting go-to’s. I used this same lighting technique for the other shots as well.

*I thought about styling this shot so everything looks nicer (clean up my crafty mess, photoshop those scuff marks away, etc) but  I think it’s a great example of how a huge studio, professional equipment and light boxes aren’t necessary to get great photos!

Camera Settings/Post editing: Exposure: 1/50, f2.8, ISO 400 all in RAW.

I edited the picture in Camera RAW 7.4 (Exposure +0.20, Clarity +3, and Vibrance +16) and then cropped it in Photoshop.

That’s it! Have any questions? Comment below and I’ll explain further. :)
